Alb\u00edn Rodr\u00edguez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><b>University of Ja\u00e9n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014both members of the <\/span><b>MicroChip4Age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project\u2014took part in a scientific expedition to <\/span><b>San Pedro de Atacama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The visit was made possible thanks to an invitation from <\/span><b>Dr. Ricardo Bustos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of the <\/span><b>PhD Program in Artificial Intelligence of CRUCH Biob\u00edo-\u00d1uble<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and was joined by <\/span><b>Dr. Silvia Restrepo Medina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from UCSC\u2019s Faculty of Engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this unique experience, the researchers had the opportunity to visit some of the most iconic astronomical observatories in the world, located at over <\/span><b>5,000 meters above sea level<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in one of the <\/span><b>cleanest, most stable, and extreme environments on Earth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for scientific observation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visit included three internationally renowned facilities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>SIMONs (Atmospheric Monitoring Systems)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: focused on the high-precision analysis of atmospheric conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>CLASS (Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: dedicated to the study of the <\/span><b>cosmic microwave background<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, essential for understanding the origin of the universe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the <\/span><b>world\u2019s most advanced radio telescope array<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consisting of <\/span><b>66 antennas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and equipped with one of the most powerful correlators on the planet, operating at the <\/span><b>highest recorded altitude for a system of its kind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reflections on MicroChip4Age in extreme environments<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this extraordinary setting, the MicroChip4Age team reflected on how the systems developed through the project\u2014focused on <\/span><b>non-invasive localization and monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014could be adapted and scaled to <\/span><b>extreme environments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as high-altitude zones, scientific bases, remote rural areas, or critical infrastructure settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>low temperatures, atmospheric pressure, and limited connectivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Atacama Desert provided an ideal context for assessing the <\/span><b>resilience, energy efficiency, and operational autonomy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the technological solutions developed within the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MicroChip4Age: innovation with a global perspective<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This experience strengthens the <\/span><b>international and interdisciplinary character<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>MicroChip4Age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and highlights its potential to go beyond traditional health and social care applications\u2014applying its advances in <\/span><b>microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and sensor technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to new frontiers of innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the MicroChip4Age team reflect on the future of intelligent localization and monitoring systems in extreme settings during their visit to astronomical observatories in San Pedro de Atacama.
